CNN reports that Amazon has launched a new yellow pages type of feature for their A9 search engine that allows users to virtually walk streets and see photos and video of businesses. The search feature is the latest in a trend towards video capability in search engines. Google and Yahoo have both recently launched video features. The aggresive move by Amazon is also part of the battle to gain marketshare in the potentially lucrative yellow pages or local search market. Microsoft's Browser Dominance Slipping
Techworld.com reports that Microsoft's dominance in the browser marketplace with Internet Explorer (IE) may be slipping. Techworld.com cited two different research companies, WebSideStory and OneStat, which found that the number of people using IE had fallen a few percentage points while people using the Firefox browser from Mozilla had increased. Firefox usage increased by nearly 5% from May 2004 to November 2004 according to OneStat while IE usage fell by over 6% in the same timeframe. More people are also using browsers like Safari and Opera. The problems for IE begin when they were continually plagued with security issues last year.

Google Losing Search Engine Lead
Google still has a big lead but search engines provided by Yahoo and Microsoft (MSN Search) are starting to narrow the gap. A recent Wall Street Journal article cited a study that showed many web users find Yahoo and Microsoft's search engines to be comparable to Google's. 61% of those surveyed said they would likely make Yahoo their primary search engine -- an 11% increase over last year's 50% result. Google did do better with 84% saying they would make Google their primary search tool -- however 86% had said this about Google in last year's survey. Danny Sullivan, editor of Search Engine Watch, told the WSJ that, "It's not a neck-and-neck race at all, but it's getting closer."

Spam Growth Rate Slowing
There is some finally some good news in the fight against spam. An article on InfoWorld cites numbers from MessageLabs and Symantec that show the growth rate of spam emails have slowed. MessageLabs and Symantec try and measure the percentage of email messsages that are spam messages. Symantec shows about 67% and MessageLabs shows about 72%. Those are high percentages, but the good news is that the numbers have stayed in the 60-70% range for a few months. Unfortunately InfoWorld also found some bad news -- the percentage of spam emails is rising for coporate email networks.

SixApart Buys LiveJournal
Writenews.com reports that SixApart has acquired the popular LiveJournal blogging service. This will allow SixApart, which offers the Movable Type publishing platform and TypePad personal weblogging service, to have a combined blog user base of 6.5 million users. This puts them in a better position to compete with companies like Google, which owns Blogger.com. Barak Berkowitz, Six Apart's chief executive officer said the acquisition of LiveJournal makes Six Apart the industry's largest independent provider of weblogging tools. B.L. Ochman, author of What Could Your Company Do with a Blog, told EcommerceTimes.com that he expects more big mergers to occur in the blogging world.

Microsoft's first security offering is Windows AntiSpyware (Beta), which will be available for free until July 2005. CNN/Money senior writer Paul R. La Monica wrote that "despite its formidable financial resources and marketing heft, Microsoft faces a lot of challenges in the security software market."
