Google Completes DoubleClick Acquisition
Google announced on the Google Blog today the completion of the DoubleClick acquisition. At one time DoubleClick was considered the leader in online advertising. Several years ago nearly all of the top websites used DoubleClick software to rotate advertisements and sell banner ad inventory. In the Google Blog post Google talks about combining their advertising network with DoubleClick's display ad serving products.
Advertisers and publishers who work with us have long asked that we complement our search and content-based text advertising with display advertising capabilities. DoubleClick gives Google the leading platform for display advertising, enabling us to rapidly bring advances to the market in technology and infrastructure that will dramatically improve the effectiveness, measurability and performance of digital media for publishers, advertisers and agencies.
As the combination of Google and DoubleClick delivers better, more relevant display ads, we're also looking forward to delivering an improved online experience to users. Because user trust is paramount to the success of our business, users will continue to benefit from our commitment to protecting user privacy following this acquisition. And our scale and infrastructure mean that users will also be spending less time waiting for web pages to load. Ultimately, we believe that by combining our advertising network with DoubleClick's display ad serving products, and by investing resources in the display ad business, we will be able to help publishers and advertisers generate more revenue. That in turn will fuel the creation of even more rich and diverse content for Internet users everywhere
DoubleClick has some very powerful banner management software that Google could share with its AdSense pulbishers. It will be interesting to see if they end up sharing this technology with their publishers and how it will all play from a publisher's perspective. The mention offering more tools for publishers in a post on the AdSense blog. You can read more discussion about the acquisition on Techmeme and Megite.

Alex Tew Earns a Million Selling Pixels
News.com reports that Alex Tew, the innovative kid who launched the Million Dollar Homepage as a bid to raise money for college has definitely succeeded. Tew sells one million pixels on the site at a $1 per pixel. He is rapidly closing in on his $1 million dollar goal. He has sold 999,000 pixels and has placed the last 1,000 pixels for bid on eBay.
The idea: turn his home page into a billboard made up of a million dots, and sell them for a dollar a dot to anyone who wants to put up their logo. A square of 10-by-10 pixels, roughly the size of a letter of type, costs $100.
He sold a few to his brothers and some friends. When he had made $1,000, he issued a press release that was picked up by the news media and spread around the Internet.
Soon advertisers for everything from dating sites to casinos to real estate agents to The Times of London were putting up real cash for pixels with links to their own sites. So far they have bought up 911,800 pixels.
Tew's home page now looks like an online Times Square, festooned with a multicolored confetti of ads.
There are many sites trying to duplicate Tew's success but they probably lack the large amount of press Tew has been able to generate by first coming up with the idea of selling pixels.

Yahoo Sense
Search Engine Journal reports (citing multiple rumors) that
Yahoo may be close to launching an advertising distribution
network that competes with Google. Google greatly expanded
their pay-per-click keyword advertising space when they
launched the AdSense program that lets other websites run
Google text ads. It has also been reported that Yahoo plans
to drop Overture as the name for its pay-per-click advertising
service. Yahoo also recently launched Yahoo Developer Services,
which lets developers build applications using the Yahoo
API.

Affiliate Programs Thrive Online
Affiliate programs may not have the buzz they once had. Many webmasters were turned off by affiliate programs when the dot-com crash came, affiliate programs were canceled and many checks went unpaid. However, despite the crash and the industry slump, the affiliate industry continued. Today, affiliate providers like Linkshare.com, CJ.com, Performics and BeFree continue to connect merchants with website owners. And companies like Amazon.com continue to rake in profits from its large independent network of affiliate websites.
