Some of the ongoing discussions include: 10 Years Since Netscape It has been ten years since Marc Andreessen posted the first web browser which led to the founding of Netscape with Jim Clark and James Barksdale. Netscape helped kick-start the Internet boom. Looking back on their adventures the founders still seem amazed and stunned. Andreessen told USA Today that one of his biggest surprises from the web is eBay. "Who knew there was that much crap in people's garages to sell?" he told USA Today. Source: USA Today 1/3 of Americans Log On at Work Many Americans (37%) log on at work and 86% of these at-work Internet users have broadband access at their work place. At-work Internet users also tend to spend more hours online that at-home users and they prefer the Web to other mediums for news and information. Source: The Write News Emachines Debuts Pentium 4 PCs Emachines, the second leading US PC retailer, has debuted two new Pentium 4 PCs. The new machines, 2.4GHz and 2.53GHz desktops, will list at retail prices of $849 and $899. Gateway, Dell and Hewlett Packard are also releasing low-priced 2.4 GHz computers. Source: News.com Google Tries to Reassure Bloggers, Privacy Groups As the popularity of the search engine Google.com grows, the Google company finds itself trying to reassure consumers and privacy advocates that their privacy won't be compromised at Google expands into new areas. Also, bloggers want to know what Google's plans are for the Blogger.com weblog tool. And if that is not enough trouble for Google, they also have to defend their trademark and "google" from being used as a verb that means "to search using the web". Sources: News.com Slashdot.org HowToWeb Forums PDA or Smartphone? PDAs are still very popular with consumers but they face growing competition from smartphones. However, as handheld devices and phones add more and more features, it will be difficult to determine exactly what is a PDA and what is a smartphone. Trends show that people want one do-it-all device that can browse the web, make wireless calls, send text messages and provide organizer type functions. Source: Internet.com AOL Adds Pop-up Blocking Option AOL is adding a Pop-up blocking feature to its 8.0 software. AOL has over 25 million users, so the move could significantly impact advertisers that make revenues from the despised pop-up ads. Competitor Earthlink already provides pop-up blocking tools. The new websites are the first of several targeted business-to-business sites focusing on specific product categories, which will provide fresh editorial content as well as aggregate content from Ziff Davis Media's eWeek.com and PCMag.com and other Web sources. SI.com http://www.si.com The SI.com website, which remains part of the CNN online network (CNN.com & CNNMoney.com), will provide scores, news, statistics and analysis of domestic and international sports, as well as fantasy sports leagues. SI.com will also continue to deliver Sports Illustrated content, including online columns from its writers, a searchable SI covers database and a daily online photo gallery. Previously, SI.com was called CNNSI.com. women-21.gov http://www.women-21.gov Hector V. Barreto, administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration, and U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao has announced the launch of women-21.gov, a new website to help women small business owners deal with the ever-changing business climate and identify federal government resources for women. MusicMoz.org http://www.musicmoz.org MusicMoz.org, a new directory for music sites, aims to become a comprehensive directory of music, built by volunteers around the world. MusicMoz only offers volunteer editing positions. MusicMoz, aka The Open Music Project, was created because music information is one of the most searched topics online, and a very important application of the internet. MusicMoz and many of its features were inspired by the Open Directory Project. BillOReilly.com http://www.billoreilly.com BillOReilly.com is a website for fans of the Fox News broadcasting personality. Bill O’Reilly is personally involved in his new website and offers “behind the scenes” access to the members of his new service. BillOReilly.com and its email newsletters are updated daily with new content from O’Reilly’s “No Spin” radio, television, and newspaper features. AftermarketZone.com http://www.aftermarketzone.com Mobile Electronics, Auto Trim & Restyling News and Truck & SUV Performance magazines joined have forces to create AftermarketZONE.com, a new directory that gives automotive retailers access to over 5,000 suppliers and manufacturers and the ability to search in more than 850 product categories.
