Yahoo to Buy Overture Yahoo will soon buy Overture for over $1.6 billion. This will help Yahoo compete with search rival Google.com. Overture recently purchased both Altavista and Fast Search, so Yahoo will definitely strengthen its line up of search technologies. Yahoo also recently purchased Inktomi, a leading provider of algorithmic search technology. The deal will also give Yahoo entry into the pay-per-click search market. Overture competes head-to-dead with Google in pay-per-click advertising. Sources: News.com Human Weakness Leads to Stolen Passwords Human weakness and mistakes are one of the main reasons passwords fall into the wrong hands. Some people use the same password for everything. Some people never change their default password on a new service. Human weakness can also cause problems at companies when people mistakenly give out passwords to thieves calling the company. Source: Ecommercetimes.com Microsoft to Outsource Some U.S. Tech Jobs? Recent media articles have indicated that a number of U.S. technology jobs are being lost, as companies outsource tech jobs overseas. It has also been revealed that Microsoft has recently opened a test call center in India and could eventually shift some of its U.S. jobs overseas. Many companies will soon be switching to disk-based replication to make the backup and recovery process much easier. With disk-based replication data can be mirrored on another server to provide an instant recovery option. Sources: Newsfactor.com WWForums.com Orrin Hatch Caught Using Unlicensed Software Senator Orrin Hatch, who is backing the extreme measures music companies want to take to prevent people from downloading illegal music files, has been using unlicensed software on his own website. Hatch backs the music companies plan to destroy people's computers if they illegally download pirated music files. Source: Media Cynic Google Launches Text Ad Program for Publishers Google has launched AdSense, a new program that allows web publishers to use its pay-per-click technology for a share of the revenues. Google hopes many small web publishers sign up so that it can expand the reach of its AdWords (pay-per-click) program. Google will review each website before accepting them into the program. Critics claim the new program could make Google's AdWords program less effective and lower click-through rates. In addition to regular content features, the website offers a recipe database containing hundreds of different recipes. The PR Survey Observer http://www.pr-survey.com The PR Survey Observer is a new resource for marketing and public relations executives interested in innovative ways to raise brand visibility and protect corporate reputation. The new resource center is designed to highlight the use of survey strategies in public relations and marketing campaigns by enabling visitors to locate surveys by topic, keyword or company name. MarthaTalks.com http://www.marthatalks.com Martha Stewart has launched a personal website at MarthaTalks.com. The site is Stewart's method of choice for talking directly to her "Friends and Loyal Supporters". In the site's first day, more than 2 million hits were logged and more than 20,000 visitors took the time to send messages. ARKive http://www.arkive.org Described as a 21st Century Noah’s Ark, ARKive a virtual conservation effort. The project’s aim is to provide a permanent safe haven for the world's most important nature films, photographs, sound recordings, and memories. The site will also provide vivid and fact-backed portraits of Earth's endangered plants and animals. Government Information Awareness (GIA) Website http://opengov.media.mit.edu This website, launched by MIT, collects information from the general public, as well as from numerous online sources, to provide powerful online resource about the U.S. government. Currently the database contains information on more than 3,000 government figures. Graduate student Ryan McKinley said the GIA was inspired by the federal government's Terrorist Information Awareness program (TIA), an effort to monitor Americans' lives in detail, from credit card purchases to pets' veterinary records. The Vatican http://www.vatican.va The Vatican has launched an updated $850,000 website which includes a special section about the Vatican's secret archives. The website also offers virtual tours of the Vatican museums. Writers Write Book Promotion Resource http://www.writerswrite.com/bookpromotion/ The writerswrite.com book promotion section includes articles, features, and discussion. A resource section is also provided which contains links to helpful online book marketing resources. Articles in the new section cover topics like book signings, reviews, co-operative advertising, book tours, flyers, book promotion plans, hiring publicists and website publicity. The writerswrite.com book promotion resource also contains lists of books offering book marketing advice and marketing and publicity classified ads.
