New Discussions Include: Webmaster News Wireless Tools Fail During Huge Blackout The worst blackout in the United States led to widespread problems using wireless tools like cell phones. Many websites were also down and web usage dropped as people were unable to access the Internet. Source: News.com MSBlaster Worm Infects Hundreds of Thousands A worm that takes advantage of the biggest Windows flaw ever has already taken down hundreds of computers running Windows software. The MSBlast worm can shut down computers using Windows 2000, Windows ME and Windows XP. On Saturday, the worm is expected to turn PCs into zombie machines that will launch a denial of service attack against one of Microsoft's websites. A patch is available from Microsoft to protect computers from the worm. Symantec, which has listed the worm as a Level 4 threat, also has a detailed page providing help to infected users and users looking to patch their computers. Sources: News.com Symantec Inappropriate Ads from Google Google is working to fix bugs in the text ad program it outsources to publishers. Recently Google served online New York Post readers a text ad for a luggage dealer along with a story about a murderer who packed the victim's body parts inside a suitcase. Google plans to provide options to allow publishers to remove inappropriate ads. Source: New York Times Netscape's Mozilla Group Cut From AOL AOL has laid off 50 people involved with browser development at its Netscape unit and is terminating its involvement with the Mozilla Project. Mozilla provided a popular open-source browser alternative to Microsoft's Internet Explorer. However, AOL also announced the launch of the Mozilla Foundation, which will continue Mozilla's open-source projects. AOL put $2 million into the new organization. Source: The Write News How Many Blogs Are There? Who Reads Them? Just how many weblogs are there and is anyone bothering to read any of them? According to Blogcount, there are about 2.5 million blog accounts and about 1.6 million active blogs. However, Jupiter Research reports that only about 4% of web users actually bother to read weblogs. And most blog readers (about 75%) have been online for 5 years or longer. Sources: Blogcount WWForums.com Email Problems Major Stressor for IT Managers A recent BBC article cited a survey which found that 1/3 of information technology managers find a week's worth of email problems more stressful than getting married, getting divorced or moving. 1/5 thought they could be fired if the email was down for a day or longer. Sources: BBC WWForums.com New Websites AnswerSquad http://answersquad.com AnswerSquad is a new service that teams up top tech and computer book authors to answer technical questions for subscribers. Available for a monthly fee of $25, the AnswerSquad mailing list lets subscribers ask as many questions as they want and discuss any tech topics directly with the Squad experts and other list members. Mozilla Foundation http://www.mozilla.org The Mozilla Foundation is a new non-profit organization that will continue to promote the development, distribution and adoption of the Mozilla standards-based web applications and core technologies, including the Gecko browser layout engine. The Mozilla division was recently cut from AOL Time Warner. Mediabuddies.com http://www.mediabuddies.com Mediabuddies.com is a new reunion website exclusively for media professionals. The website aims to give media people an easy way to reconnect. Members will have the capability to trace and contact old colleagues and contacts via the Mediabuddies database. Smithsonian Education http://www.smithsonianeducation.org Smithsonian Education lets students, educators, and parents access learning materials designed to engage and enlighten. Teachers can take young students for a moonwalk or archaeological dig, all from the classroom. There's also content for older students and interactive features like make a sculpture, or see what's new at the National Zoo. meetup.com http://www.meetup.com Meetup.com is a new website that organizes local interest groups. Meetup helps people self-organize local group gatherings on the same day everywhere. Meetups take place at local cafés, restaurants, bookstores, and other local establishments. The Write Jobs http://www.writejobs.com Writejobs.com provides job listings, career resources and information for journalism, media and publishing professionals. The Write Jobs has been online since 1997. With the launch of WriteJobs.com, the website has been expanded and moved to its own domain at www.writejobs.com.
