New Discussions Include: Webmaster News Stealth Spyware Programs Steal Data Individuals are increasingly under attack from stealth spyware programs. The spyware programs install from a download or are placed on the PC by a hacker. Once on the computer the spyware allows the hacker to look at files, steal information, find credit card numbers and even look through webcams. Source: MSNBC.com Defeating Adware and Spyware A number of products are now available for defeating and removing the rising number of adware and spyware programs, like eZula, TopText, Gator and WhenU. Spyware programs, which often install themselves without the users knowledge, can bomb web users with pop-up ads, crash computers, track surfing habits and steal affiliate revenues from websites by rewriting affiliate code. Some of the most malicious spyware programs can even steal credit card information, data and passwords. Unfortunately the number of spyware programs continue to rise while websurfers continue to be unaware of them and the harm they can cause. SpyCop has found that over 350 spyware products are currently being actively distributed. Sources: NewsFactor.com.com Survey Confirms It: Spam Sucks People's loathing of spam certainly comes as no surprise. However, according to a new Pew Internet study, 25% of people have simply given up on email because of spam and stopped using it. Spams unpopularity is so huge that it damages legitimate marketers as well. A small percentage even believe that commercial email is spam even if they had previously given the company permission to send them email. Source: News.com Windows to Power ATMs Many ATMs have signed on to be powered by Microsoft software. 65% of ATMs will run on a version of Windows by 2005. Most ATMs currently use IBM's OS/2 operating system. Source: Wired News Video On Electronic Paper The upcoming electronic paper products will not only be able to display print (for books and other content) -- but they will also be able to display video through a technology called electrowetting. Sources: BBC Television Without Screens Companies are working on technology that will allow video to be projected into the air -- without screens. However, it may be 2015 before the project sees everday use in people's homes. So far, the projections are only two-dimensional, not three dimensional. Sources: Wired New Websites AOL Journals http://hometown.aol.com AOL Journals is a new service from AOL that aims to make it easy for AOL members to share thoughts and photos online with friends, family and others on the Internet. Members can choose an existing template or design their own to create a journal, blog, an online column or a travelogue. Members can update their journals by sending an Instant Message or by via text messages from a cell phone. Napster 2.0 http://www.napster.com Napster 2.0 has begun beta testing and will be available to all music fans in the United States on October 29th. The new service will offer 99-cent downloads from a digital music library with over 500,000 songs. Napster 2.0 will also feature a series of partnerships that help consumers move music from the PC to digital audio devices, into the living room and their cars. IGN Sports http://sports.ign.com IGN Sports is a new editorial channel from IGN Entertainment covering sports electronic games, athletes and lifestyles. IGN Sports will focus on interviews with top professional athletes and game publishers. IGN Sports will cover games from football, basketball, baseball, hockey, soccer, tennis, wrestling, golf and more. Plaxo http://www.plaxo.com Plaxo helps people keep up-to-date with friends, family and associates. The service allows people to inform others in their contact network about address and phone number changes as well as receive address, email and phone number updates from others. Address, email and phone number updates can be made easily by sending an email. The service works with Outlook and Outlook Express. SEMPO http://www.sempo.org More than 300 search engine marketing firms and consultants have announced that they are joining forces to become founding members of the Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization (SEMPO). The mission of the new industry association is to increase awareness and promote the value of search engine marketing services. Digital Book Index http://www.digitalbookindex.com The Digital Book Index is an ebook directory that provides access to more than 73,000 ebook titles. The Digital Book Index gathers both commercial and non-commercial ebooks from more than 1800 publishers and private publishing organizations. There is no charge to search the website's database. More than 25,000 titles from public archives are available free, while many others are available for a fee.
