Vol. 3, Issue No. 6 ISSN No. 1097-2056 New Websites Free Encyclopedia Britannica! http://www.britannica.com/ Britannica.com Inc. has made the entire text of the Encyclopedia Britannica available free of charge within the company's new website. The complete 32-volume set is now available free to any Web surfer, with the site supported by advertisements. Britannica first brought its encyclopedia to the Internet five years ago as a subscription service. In addition to the encyclopedia, the site combines content from newspapers, magazines, reference works, books, and websites. BrainConnection.com http://www.brainconnection.com BrainConnection.com, a new resource and online magazine, covers topics such as visual perception, developmental learning, aging and the brain, evolution of the brain, and profiles of major figures in brain research. BrainConnection.com will also include daily news about brain research, reviews of articles from leading journals dealing with brain research, chat rooms and forums, links to other sites, and a customization feature allowing users to create a personalized home page. Getting on Target With Y2K http://www.pbs.org/y2kontarget/ This new website from PBS Online provides resources and information to support an altervative to violence in the Millennium: that people come together in homes, schools, neighborhoods and communities to begin a dialogue and develop "just in case" plans that provide local safety nets for potential social risks posed by the advent of the year 2000. "Getting on Target With Y2K" provides prudent personal and neighborhood preparedness tips, youth activities, information on public television and radio Y2K programming, weekly opinion polls and news and views. The site also features the Year 2000 Living History Project, a comprehensive service-learning program for high school and upper middle school students that reframes the Y2K computer crisis as a positive growth and community-service opportunity for young people. Family Tree Magazine http://www.familytreemagazine.com/ Family Tree Magazine, a new bimonthly magazine and website has launched to help genealogy enthusiasts discover their family history. The new magazine hits newsstands on Nov. 2. The website launched on Wednesday, Oct. 6, with an array of tools and search engines. Family Tree Magazine will cover areas of potential interest to family-history enthusiasts such as ethnic heritage, family reunions, scrapbooking and historic travel. VoxCap.com http://www.voxcap.com VoxCap.com, an online community and resource about political issues, has launched "The Almanac of Internet Politics," an interactive series aimed at shedding light on key Internet issues facing the U.S. candidates and electorate in the 2000 campaign. The series, written by online journalist Dana Blankenhorn, explores key issues like speech, spam, and sales taxes with links to stories and interest groups. Then site also invites voters to have their say, using VoxCap.com's community building tools. DrDrew.com http://www.drdrew.com Dr. Drew Pinsky, better known simply as "Dr. Drew," the co-host of the nationally syndicated Loveline radio and television shows, has launched his health and lifestyle website, drDrew.com. DrDrew.com is a website and community created for young adults, ages 14-34. DrDrew.com will be updated daily with new content and provide an active community environment which encourages users to share their experiences with their peer group. Site features include: feature stories, user polls, Q & A with Dr. Drew, health articles, news stories, interviews, book reviews and free homepages. |
