Google Webmaster Tools (GWT) has been given a new name, Google Search Console. The idea behind the name change is that not everyone using Google Webmaster Tools. The name change is probably the most shocking to webmasters. The name change is already in effect.

Google says the idea of a webmaster applies to only some users of its GWT service. Google says other users include hobbyists, small business owners, SEO experts, marketers, programmers, designers and app developers. Webmasters tend to wear many hats and do everything from coding to search marketing. In the early days of the Internet there were only webmasters. Now there are people who only do specific things, such as work on search engine optimization for a website or develop apps.

Google says in the announcement, "What you all share is a desire to make your work available online, and to make it findable through Google Search. So, to make sure that our product includes everyone who cares about Search, we've decided to rebrand Google Webmaster Tools as Google Search Console."

Bing still calls its similar resource "Bing Webmaster Tools." We will see if Microsoft decides to give it a new name in the near future.
