Rethink Robotics Unveils One Armed Robot Named Sawyer

Posted on March 30, 2015

Rethink Robotics has launched its new one armed Sawyer robot. Rethink is the company behind the Baxter robot. Sawyer has a screen for a face like Baxter. Sawyer also runs on the same Intera software.

Sawyer weighs 42 pounds (19 kilograms). It has 7 degrees of freedom and 1 meter reach. It has high-resolution force sensing embedded at each joint. It can also maneuver into tight spaces. Sawyer's twisting arm features a plug-like hand. Sawyer has a camera in its head and a built-in light source at its wrist.

Rethink CEO Scott Eckert says, "With Baxter, we introduced the concept of robots and people working together on the plant floor. With Sawyer, we have taken that relationship to the next level, with a high performance robot that opens the door for many new applications that have never been good candidates for automation. As we continue to redefine this industry, we also continue to give manufacturers new ways of adding efficiency and flexibility into their operations."

Sawyer will have a base price $29,000 and go on sale this summer.
